Q: Do I have to enroll in Medicare Part B when I turn 65?

Do I need to enroll in Part B?

Choosing whether or not to enroll in Medicare Part B when you first become eligible is an important decision. There are a number of issues you need to consider. For example, in many cases, if you don’t sign up for Part B when you’re first eligible, you’ll have to pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have Part B. You also may have to wait until the General Enrollment Period (from January 1 to March 31) to enroll in Part B, and coverage will start July 1 of that year.

You may be able to delay signing up for Medicare Part B without a late enrollment penalty if you or your spouse (or a family member, if you’re disabled) is working, and you’re getting health insurance benefits based on current employment.

If you need help in determining how your coverage works with Medicare, contact your employer or union benefits administrator.
