How I Got From Way Over There To Medicare

For over 20 years I’ve enjoyed making a living as a Creative Consultant and Designer. I’ve had the pleasure of helping over 3,000 clients nationally identify their biggest marketing challenge and solve it with creative solutions. This often entails building websites, producing tv and radio advertising jingles, helping people self-publish books to sell on Amazon, and other fun projects.

A few years ago, a client asked me to build a website that makes it easier to understand how Medicare works. I said, “Isn’t there an official government website for that?”

“Yes,” he replied, “but it’s cumbersome to navigate. It needs to be simpler.”

I asked friends, neighbors, clients, and just about everyone I met who was over 65 if they understood how Medicare works. They all shook their heads, rolled their eyes, and said:

“Medicare is sooooo confusing!”

I was stunned to learn that the vast majority of people who are turning 65 do not clearly understand what Medicare Part A and Part B cover, don’t cover, and cost, or how Part C, Part D, and Medigap plans help you fill the gaps in coverage and minimize your financial risk. Worse yet, they have so many misconceptions and misunderstandings about Medicare, it’s alarming!

With over 10,000 people per day turning 65 in the USA, I can’t help but wonder how many of them will discover AFTER they’ve had a serious illness or injury that they could have saved hundreds, or thousands, or hundreds of thousands of dollars in hospital and medical bills if they understood their Medicare options better? We don’t know what we don’t know… and sometimes what we don’t know can hurt us.

I felt compelled to do something about this problem. Not only for everyone who was turning 65 but for myself, too, because I was going to need this information soon, as well. Surely I could find a way to make Medicare insurance easier to grasp… right?

I took a deep breath and rolled up my sleeves.

Medicare is such a complex federal insurance program, the only way I could truly wrap my head around the full scope of the problem and find a solution was to see it from all angles; inside and out. So, I enrolled in a Life & Health insurance course.

I must say that becoming a licensed independent insurance broker was not part of the original plan when I started researching this topic. But the more I thought about helping people navigate through the Medicare maze, the more interested I became in doing this professionally. So, I took the Nevada Department of Insurance exam and got my Life & Health insurance license.

Once I clearly understood how Medicare works, I felt confident that I could explain it to people in a way that makes more sense.  I wrote a book, Medicare Insurance Simplified, and color-coded the information about Part A, Part B, Part C, Part D, and Medigap plans. I also included information on enrollment periods, traveling with Medicare, and more. The paperback edition is available on Amazon, but you are welcome to simply download the FREE PDF ebook edition here.

This journey of life is sure filled with unexpected turns and surprises. I’m so happy mine led me from way over there, as a Creative Consultant, to here, as a licensed independent insurance broker. I truly love helping people figure out which Medicare plan will fit their needs best.

This is my why.
