Once your ship is (6) hours away from the nearest U.S. port you are in the country of whatever flag is flying on the mainmast of your ship. Most cruise ships are registered in a foreign country. So, unless your health insurance or Medicare plan covers “foreign travel,” it may offer little or no protection or reimbursement for the costs of any medical treatments received onboard a cruise.
Note: Original Medicare Part A and Part B does not cover foreign travel, except in rare situations. If you have any questions about your Medicare coverage, consult with an insurance broker or contact us to help you review your plan.
“Should I buy travel insurance?”
Travel insurance provides financial protection for unexpected travel expenses, such as medical emergencies, delayed flights, lost or stolen baggage, last minute cancellations, and more.
There are many types of plans to choose from. (Those offered by cruise lines generally have significant limitations and restrictions!) Some policies will only settle claims with “cruise credits,” while others will give you a cash reimbursement. Read the fine print carefully!
Always purchase travel insurance from a reputable insurance company that can provide the coverage and services you need.
I will be happy to show you options for travel insurance plans that fit your needs, as well as your budget, so you can have peace of mind and enjoy your vacation!
